My name is Sarah Emson and I have been a secondary maths and special needs teacher, as well as head of maths, for over ten years. I have realised that if students arrive at secondary school understanding multiplication and feeling confident about times tables they stand a much better chance at leaving school with a good standard of maths qualification. In the UK this is a grade C or above at GCSE. If they do not feel confident then we must work quickly to ensure they overcome their difficulties by the end of year eight.
In 2006 I was working at a school where there was a high proportion of students with specific learning difficulties and dyslexia. I started using cards with pictures on them to represent times tables. The combined visual, auditory and kinaesthetic (multisensory) approach made it an instant success and my card game Turn Tables was born!
Since then I have had two children and want to change my career to fit around them. I started Multisensory Matters to run workshops, do tutoring and distribute the card games and other multisensory products.
Our aim is to give young people the confidence and skills to do mathematics so that they can succeed at school and in later life.
We currently distribute Turn Tables to schools and parents who want an alternative, multisensory approach to doing times tables.
For anyone who is interested, I am Sarah Emson BSc(Hons) PGCE PGDip(SpLD).
